swiftsnowmane: (Bethyl - we should burn it down)

I hadn't checked the stats on my Ao3 in a while, but today I happened to glance at them and noticed that Between the Fire and the Sky (my slow-burn Bethyl longfic) had reached 20, 000 hits! :O

Might not seem like a big deal to some, but that is by far the most hits any fic of mine has ever had (or will likely ever have, lol). BtFatS is my 'baby', so I'm just incredibly touched to see that people are still reading (and re-reading) it. :')

"She still held to the faith of her father, in that she believed there was a heaven waiting beyond this life, and yet she would not let her belief lead her unthinking into oblivion. I won’t surrender, she thought with a vehemence that startled her. I will walk this path to whatever end may await. I will not fade away into nothingness. I’d rather burn.

No, if the God of her father still ruled this world, then surely His reign was not in scripture scrawled threateningly across a wall, nor in the mind of a single, demented leader. Nor was it in the depths of that dark water, but rather in the light that filtered through the trees at dawn, in the flight of the pale doves in the morning, in the graceful, folding wings of a pair of mated swans, in the footsteps of a great stag upon the frosted earth, in the distant stars at night, the flames of the evening sky.

And in those few, small fires that yet flickered within the hearts of men."

Her heart shook with the thunderous truth of it: the world had fallen long before the turning, long before the hungry dead had risen up to devour those who dared yet live. It had not been the hissing of the Serpent, that whispered temptation in the Garden, nor the blinking, bewildered emergence from the forested Paradise. It had not even been the first slaying of kin, brother betraying brother. No, the world had been plunged into darkness the moment man had first placed his fellow man—and woman—in chains.

Bodies and minds, subjugated. Free will, stolen. Man had set his brother into bondage, and in doing so, had imprisoned himself. She’d never been in jail, she’d told him once. She hadn’t realized, hadn’t understood, that long before they had stepped behind those barbed fences, long before they had sheltered within those shadowed halls, they had all been prisoners. Humanity had shackled itself, long ago.

For the first time, she questioned her certainty in the injustice of this unleashed hell. For the first time, she wondered if the world was merely getting what it deserved.

There’s still good people.

No, she corrected herself. There’s only him, now.

"This is what he remembers as he finally falls down to his knees. When he sinks into a sea of blood, when the tips of his wings are stained dark red for the first and final time, a blessed crimson oblivion rising, coming for him at long last. This is what he remembers when the grit and the sand and the wind whirl around him, when all goes dim, when the last man standing stands no more."

swiftsnowmane: (Bethyl - 30 Days)

~

Last night, the talented artist ruebella-b surprised me on tumblr with the sweetest gift: a beautiful Bethyl fan art. Everything about it is just so lovely. The tender poses, the elegiac mood. I know it might not seem like a big deal, but I'm deeply touched. It's things like this that make my day and help me believe once more that "there's still good people." :')

Many thanks again to dear ruebella-b for this most thoughtful and generous gift!

Herein is a list of all the various fanworks I've started, completed, and/or posted this year, including fics, edits, and a few commissions/collaborations. I've been feeling so incredibly down about all that I've failed to complete this year, so I'm trying to focus on what I did I manage to do (rather than the perhaps unrealistic amount of things I'd hoped to finish). :P

Most of these are viewable on the Bethyl and Fire & Sky sections of my tumblr, but since they are mixed together with works from last year, I thought I'd gather together everything from 2015 into one big list.

Also included toward the end are a couple of fic rec lists as well as my top five favourite fics that I read in 2015. Just off the top of my head, the ones that have stuck with me the most vividly. :)

"The first time he looked at her he felt: everything will burn." - Anais Nin, A Spy In the House of Love

~

We all know it. The way he looks at her, that intense gaze. From early on there are glimpses of it: in the way he watches her singing for the group; in the way he hovers at the doorway of her cell, observing her, for a moment, in secret. And of course, all the subsequent glances he casts her way during their time on the run. Looks that could chill. Looks that could burn. But what is behind those looks? We all know the famous line from 'Still', when Beth tells him: "I know you look at me and you just see another dead girl." At that stage, she has a point: Daryl is unable to focus on anything other than all his various (perceived) failings. All the 'dead girls' he could not save, and his crippling fear that she will be next. Obviously, we know that during the course of 'Still', Daryl comes to see Beth in a much different light. At the end of 'Still' and during 'Alone', his longing gazes, his demeanor, and his tender, thoughtful attentions to her demonstrate his high regard for her. But what about before? What about the time before the fall of the prison, before they had (seemingly) lost everything? And what about before that? Did Daryl really always look at Beth and just see 'another dead girl'?

They didn’t look back by bubug

~

Beyond ecstatic to present this stunning illustration of Beth Greene and Daryl Dixon, commissioned for the cover of my Bethyl fanfiction, Between the Fire and the Sky. I wrote this entire story with the bubug's illustration style in mind, so this is my wildest dream come true.

Someone pinch me. Bethyl LIVES! :')

We are going to get out of here
Run from all the fears
Follow what we once held dear
When will we get out of here?

Bethyl fanvid, Shattered & Hollow by First Aid Kit

The wonderful @alillywhite has been kind enough to create a fanvid based on my one of my most cherished concepts: an AU in which Beth and Daryl eventually find each other.

Because....

“All the best stories in the world are but one story in reality — the story of escape. It is the only thing which interests us all and at all times, how to escape.”

swiftsnowmane: (Bethyl - we should burn it down)

Greetings to whomever might still be out there. :)

Despite everything, my Beth/Daryl obsession shows no signs of waning anytime soon.

For a gazillion reasons which I've explained over and over here, I don't watch TWD anymore. I have zero intention of ever doing so ever again. The implications of the so-called 'storytelling' choices disturb me on so many levels and make me physically ill to even contemplate, so I would therefore ask kindly that anyone commenting on my posts from here on out refrain from mentioning the show in its current state (in terms of plot details, etc. Please. I just....don't wanna know).

This pretty much sums up my feels:

Burn it down....oh yeeeah. ;)

But obviously when it comes to shipping these two, I still ship 'em. Oh yes. So. Damn. Hard.

Currently working on a variety of Bethyl fics, mostly WIPs I started last year but never finished due to being thrown (temporarily) off my game by the idiotic showrunner's idea of what passes for 'canon'. (A subject upon which I shall not speak, ever again.)

Most recently, I *finally* managed to get some unbroken writing time to finish/post two one shots. They run semi-concurrently and can be read together I suppose:

Transcendence (Beth PoV, set during 'Slabtown')

From Earth I Rose (Daryl PoV, set during 'Us')

That's all for now, though I've got about 10+ WIPs in my drafts still! Eeek! How the hell did that happen? I don't know that all of them will necessarily see the light or be worth finishing, but I'm going to try. Hopefully will have some more writing time this weekend, but we shall see...

Unfortunately, I'm still trying to work out what direction to take 'All That Remains' (the continuation of BtFatS). I've been stalled for months due to indecisiveness. I had an idea of where to take the story back when I started it (or rather began to continue it), but I keep second guessing myself and my storytelling abilities. Everything ends up rather dark indeed. While I think Bethyl as a pairing should always have some dark and/or bittersweet element to it, I'm just not sure how much more angst I really can really handle at this point. The Fire & Sky-verse has always been my 'happy place', so I'm torn. But I can't help it, I'm a bittersweet soul myself with more than a little twinge of melancholy darkness, so everything I do generally ends up infused with that sort of vibe. I will have to ruminate on it a little longer. In the meantime, I will try to finish a certain shameless porn-without-plot fic I started back during Bethyl Smut Week, because, well....just because. :P

For those who've been waiting impatiently for the next chapter of 'All That Remains', here's a lil somethin'. The great unfbadger has just posted a mind-blowing piece inspired by a certain er, climactic moment from Chapter 3. ;)

Tickled me so much I can't help but share. :D
